drudgeons
drudgeons:

Oil-soaked jeans. Dirty hands that won’t come clean. Sweating in garages that reek of fuel, solvents, and cigarette smoke. The hair rising on the back of your neck as you risk almost certain death hitting the ton on a back-country highway. Summer is for wrenching & riding on two wheels.

My son Benicio (del Lobo)’s 1st birthday is in a couple weeks. It’s crazy to think it’s been a year already.  In any event, I designed this poster for his birthday announcement.

Circus themes are commonplace for young babies and toddlers, but I tried to avoid most cliché copy and common conventions seen in many circus-themed birthday templates.  Instead, I went for something more rooted in actual 19th/early 20th Century circus bills and Americana landscape paintings akin to Charles Wysocki’s work.  I also utilized my muted palette from my Headgear series to give a more vintage feel.

The idea germinated from my wife’s work actually. In the months before Benicio was born, she created several circus-themed mini-paintings, a circusy, felt welcome-wreath, and a mobile complete with DIY stuffed & sewn circus animals.  I began there, using the look and basic color schemes she used then started to work it more into what my style has evolved into.

Sidenote, the Headgear series style stemmed out of the design of these circus animals.  Which is to say, I began this project several months ago, and worked on it off-and-on until I started having breakthrough ideas in layout and design elements. It’s a bit self-indulgent, but hey - it’s my boy we’re talkin’ about here.

It is the future.  The year 2000.  My early attempts at vector illustration were actually done in Adobe Flash, not Illustrator (like a normal person).
Nevertheless, here is what was my first attempt at drawing myself as a superhero (in vector form) for a comic that never happened with a friend from Virginia with whom i’ve since lost touch.
This image filled Andrew with LULZ perhaps in part, due to my self-induced overstated sex appeal.

I was curious as to what the Beatles might look like in their Sgt. Pepper’s album cover outfits, in those magnificently garish day-glo colors; but drawn in the “Yellow Submarine” album cover style.  Now we know.
